Week 8 Syllabus

Lesson: The United States Constitution
Time: 3:00 hours-5th Period; 2:15 2nd and 4th period
Unit 1

Week: 8 Dates: 3/5-3/9

Objectives:
1. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the Bill of Rights by analyzing realistic scenarios and applying the B of R to them.
2. Students will understand the Constitution’s provisions for amending itself.
Standards:

Students will develop, evaluate, and defend positions* on the effectiveness of the Constitution and Bill of Rights in protecting the rights of all citizens

Materials: Bill of Rights lecture, B of R game, Amendment process lecture

5th period-Monday. 2nd and 4th-Tuesday and Thursday.
1. Opportunity Quiz from previous week. (10 minutes)
2. Monday-5th period-Bill of Rights lecture. (30 minutes)
3. Bill of Rights Game. (50 minutes)
4. Homework- write a letter to a member of Congress about an issue of their choice. The paragraph should relate somehow to the Bill of Rights. Due process of students in schools, abortion, ownership of firearms, and freedom of speech in a student paper are all possible topics. The letter should have at least two paragraphs. The first paragraph should summarize the situation/issue. The second paragraph should explain the position the student takes on the issue and give reasons supporting the position. Due Friday.
5. Page 85-90. Answer questions 1-8. Due Friday.

5th period-Wednesday. 2nd and 4th-Friday.
1. Supreme Court Case.
2. Amendment Process.

5th period-Friday. Documentary (subject to change)

Comments: *If you miss a day of class and you are excused you may make it up. You have two class days to turn in any missed work. It is your responsibility to see me about any work that is missed because of an absence.
